Mastering Metal Music 24 May 2011, 5:14 am
Heavy metal is an extreme form of rock music, it is dark in nature and the sound relies heavily on massive sounding drum kits (often with 2 kick drums) and guitars which are distorted to give a powerful and thrilling sound. heavy metal is enjoyed by fans around the globe in the US and Europe and just about everywhere on the planet. It is a music form that has managed to spread around the world irrelevant as to what the cultural background is. This demonstrates the power and allegiance that heavy metal fans have. It is almost like a family of members subscribing to the same thrilling and powerful music. There are a number of metal sub-genres as well such as, death metal, black metal, and thrash. Each sub genre of metal has a slightly different sound to it though most retain the heavy drums and highly distorted and thickened guitar and bass sounds. Mastering heavy metal takes a skilled engineer with an experienced set of ears. One challenge is that metal musicians may have made a recording of themselves in a space and require their music to sound as full and as powerful as famous commercial artists. One common side effect is that harshness can creep into the mixes and be fatiguing. This is common with cymbals/high hats on the drums and with the upper mid range in guitars and vocals. It is especially this area which needs to be considered by the mastering engineer. Another area of great consideration is the bass within any given piece of music. this will incorporate the low frequency energy in the guitars, bass guitar and kick drum. It is important that these are in balance with each other and that they are no cloudy or muffly sounding. Of course most metal music is quite “loud” relative to softer forms of music. The online mastering engineer will be able to increase the perceived levels of the music in a way that tries not to increase the harshness of the sound. | You are receiving this email because you subscribed to this feed at blogtrottr.com.
