Uses of Spline Broaches 12 Jun 2011, 5:16 am
Spline Broach is an instrument for cutting and sizing. They are usually made for only one user and for only a particular machining operation. Spline Broaches are utilized for manufacturing purpose to form holes or cut the surfaces. A spline broach is also brought into use to cut a spline, a shaft along with a sequence of longitudinal and straight protections that fit into the gap of a mating division. Broaching is the most economical method for cutting spiral transmission gears and similar parts. A broach is a series of progressively taller points mounted on a single piece of steel, typically used to enlarge a circular hole into a larger noncircular shape such as a square or other desired shape. The broaching of external or internal splines has been practiced with considerable success with long pull broaches which are pulled entirely through the blank in order to complete the spline in a single pass. A variety of spline broaches available according to the need of work to be taken. Involute spline broach is one which a spline having the same general form as involute gear teeth, except that the teeth are one-half the depth and the pressure angle is 30°. The involute spline broach is used where the sides are equally spaced grooved are involute but are of short length. The curves increase strength by decreasing stress concentrations. Involute Spline Broaches are commonly used in various tractor lift arms, coupling flangs, bull gears, gears blanks, hubs etc. A straight sided spline broach is one, a push or pull type broach, is used to produce a straight spline profile in the periphery of a prebore component. Straight sided splines are parallal to axis of broaching tools. Straight sided spline broaches are made from materials including high speed steel, carbide, cobalt, titanium nitride & titanium aluminum nitride.A parallel spline broach is one where the sides of the equally spaced-grooves are parallel in both directions, radial and axial. A Helical Spline Broach: Helical splines can be broached with a helical broach. The teeth are ground in a helical path around the tool axis. The helix angle corresponds to that required in the work. The helical cutting teeth are formed to the desired customer’s specifications and helix angle. The helical paths can be of equal diameter along the length of the broach, but are preferably of increasing diameter in a rearward direction so as to produce a progressively larger hole as the broach is moved through the workpiece or the workpiece over the broach. |
